NAMS: National Animal Metric System

Design project for safe trafic

Goal

The goal of the project was to use technology or data to ensure safe and sustainable mobility.

Problem

We wanted to create a system for reducing the amount of wildlife killed in traffic accidents.

Solution

We ended up making a suggestion of a system for researching the number of animal crossings on specific stretches of roads. The suggestion consisted of a visual prototype as well as a low fidelity prototype of a sensor for tracking animal crossings.

Problem Definition
We began the project looking into interpretations of our goal. Using brainstorming and thematic coding to find interesting problems surrounding mobility. After deciding on securing animal mobility, we began researching the necessity for change interviewing government agencies. My role here was as a desk researcher.
Finding solution
Having found the problem we wanted to adress, we started brainstorming potential solutions. I worked alongside my team generating potential ideas. We ended up with finding that it would be more effective for us to create a system for research that would make us able to identify critical zones where preventative measures would be most effective.

Development
During development my focus was on programming the sensor we would use to track crossings. This was done using C++ and an arduino. I worked on modifying code and using physical computing to assemble the sensor prototype.
Testing
We performed a think aloud user test of the userinterface, and did a field test of the sensor to see if it would pick up on animals in the wild.
